Women and the Right to Development
The World Youth Forum held a session on December 16th to discuss women rights and how to achieve women empowerment in a context where women are facing many wrong practices. Dr. Maya Morsi, the President of the National Council for Women in Egypt, confirmed that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced that he would not sign laws against the rights of the Egyptian women and whenever those laws are considered to be biased against them, they won’t come into light.
Also, Dr. Moez Doraid, the Regional Director, A.I. of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality & Empowerment of Women (UN Women) for the Arab States, said, “The problem of violence against women is one of the most common forms of violence globally … indicating that a third of women globally experience violence during their lifetime and 37% of them are from the Arab region, and that 137 women are killed every day, either by her husband or from any member of her family”.
Moreover, Jackson Katz, an author and educator in the field of gender violence prevention, emphasized that a large part of the process of combating violence against women is through men taking responsibility of their actions. He indicated that the term ‘violence against women’ is unjust because the correct term should be ‘men’s violence against women’. He said, “We want more men who have the courage to help women and prevent these actions”.
Here’s a short movie for women around the world discussing how they managed to use their right to development in getting a better education and a better position in the job market.
